Last week I was interviewed by a colleague on the subject of power. She wanted to know, what is power and how do we access our personal power?
We can experience power in different ways. Two of those are internal and external power.
External Power
Think about external power as the authority we wield in the world. Typically, this kind of power comes from a role we might play. A role as parent, executive, teacher, administrator, boss, customer, politician, police officer…
This kind of power gives us agency, sometimes freedom. We often have responsibility as well as the ability to create or affect change.
But external power can be stripped, since it is most often related to a job, career or position we occupy in the world.
Internal Power
Internal power is something else entirely.
It is the kind of power that, like education, can never be taken away from you. It is honed through honesty, through the willingness to understand ourselves, to grow internally and heal ourselves, and ultimately to connect to our inner truth, integrity, or inner knowing. When we do this we activate our internal compass, that place where we trust our intuition and guidance.
From here, we can go even one step further if we allow ourselves to surrender fully and recognize/allow spirit to flow through us. This step involves getting quiet, clearing away all the inner chaos and chatter, the mind distractions, so we can tune into the voice for God, the voice of our own inner knowing.
This is the greatest form of accessing our real power. When we align with all of the universe.
Where are you on this spectrum?
Can you see the power/authority you wield in the world?
How powerful do you feel internally?
Can you feel your deep connection to source, to the universe?
If not, here are a few tips to help:
Get Quiet
We have to loosen our hold on the “chaos” of the world, so we can tune into the greater truth that is waiting for us. It’s always there, but we have to train ourselves to hear it.
Unhook
Another way to support this process is to relax. We don’t step into internal power by doing something. It’s the opposite. We have to relinquish, release and let go of all the mind chatter, the long held beliefs, even the tension we hold in our bodies.
Receive
Allow yourself to be open, to experience new ways of seeing, of hearing, of being. When we think we know all the answers, we can often become tight or rigid. The way to true power is through flexibility and humility.
Try these and see how it goes! The truth is, the power is yours, and it is patiently waiting for you to claim it. Are you ready?
